Wal-Mart Plans New Stores In Southern Florida

Wal-Mart Stores Inc., known for its oversized "supercenter" stores, is planning to open 10 new, mostly smaller locations in South Florida by the end of 2013.

Most of the world's largest retailer's new supercenters will be half to two-thirds the size of its typical large store format of 185,000 square feet.

Wal-Mart's growth is expected to add more than 3,000 full- and part-time jobs in South Florida. Supercenters typically have about 350 employees and smaller stores between 50 and 100.

A new North Lauderdale supercenter will be the largest to open at 182,000 square feet. The others will range from 92,000 square feet to 152,000 square feet, officials said.

Experts say smaller stores reflect retailers' desire to cut costs and shopper's increasing willingness to shop online, which reduces the need for stores to carry large inventories.

"South Florida in general is a big area of opportunity," said Michelle Azel Belaire, Wal-Mart senior manager, public affairs and government relations. South Florida's expansion is part of the retailer's continued growth.

The South Florida expansion is part of a nationwide effort to open more new and expanded Walmart stores.

Discounters and dollar stores have tended to see increased customer traffic and sales as thrifty consumers seek ways to stretch their dollars in a tough economy. Already there are more than 20 South Florida Walmarts of varying formats, and statewide, more than 200 stores, according to Wal-Mart data.
