Dollar General New Food Market Concept & Expansion As Dollar General posted yet another strong quarterly profit on Monday, the discount retailer said it soon will turn its attention to targeting food deserts — areas not served by supermarkets or nearby grocers — in a bid to fill voids in many communities. Dollar General’s food market concept was put on hold after the Goodlettsville-based chain had brought on new leadership in 2008. But chief executive Rick Dreiling told investors in a conference call that the market store push soon will resume, or as Dreiling put it, “play an expanding role in the future of Dollar General.” In interviews with company strategists, the renewed food market effort was discussed as a closely watched experiment that, based on its results, could take off in the coming quarters. The market stores carry all of the traditional items such as home goods and apparel in addition to frozen foods, dairy, meat and other grocery products.
